Spring Prenatal Charlas

E-mail Print PDF

As the new year starts, the Prenatal Educational Charlas are gearing up. This year, we will partner with Baltimore Medical System.  BMS is beginning a series of charlas that will run for four weeks, then two weeks off, then repeat the same four talks with a new groups.  This will continue for the next 12 months.  The goal is to begin the first series in the beginning of February, but the exact date is up in the air. The charlas will be held from 3-4:30.  The location and day of the week will rotate back and forth between Tuesday and Thursday and between Highlandtown and Belair.

What we need now:

1. BMS is developing materials to present.  I am looking for students interested in assisting with the development of these materials.  I have listed the content areas below. This will require becoming familiar with the topic you are interested in helping with or using your existing expertise and then meeting with BMS staff.  You can also contribute by email.

2. Volunteers to present content.   The first series of four charalas will be held on Thursday in Highlandtown.  Please contact me if you are interested. You must speak Spanish.  You will not need to present for the entire 1.5 hours. We should be able to arrange carpooling.

3. Babysitters.  Again, Thursdays in Highlandtown.  In a month and a half, we will be looking for babysitters for Tuesdays. We should be able to arrange carpooling.

Please keep in mind this is an on-going program.  If you can't help out with your current class schedule, you may be able to help later.  Looking forward to hearing from everyone,

Katie

PSA Recording

E-mail Print PDF
Bienestar has a new project! We are recording public service announcements in Spanish for the radio, covering a range of health topics. We already have two PSAs written that we need to record. We have a recording studio to do it in and a radio station willing to take them. After that we hope to write and record even more PSAs and expand to other radio stations.

All levels of Spanish are welcome!
  • We need native speakers to be the voices on the recordings.
  • We need moderate-advanced level speakers to help write new PSAs.
  • We need people with any or no level of Spanish to help with the technical aspects of recording and editing.
You can participate as much or as little as you want! Volunteer for one recording session or become involved more long-term.

Prenatal Charlas Series starting - Volunteers Needed!

E-mail Print PDF
Bienestar Baltimore is excited to announce that a series of prenatal charlas will begin in early September.

To ensure the series' success, we need:

  • Spanish speakers to present the material (we have  powerpoint presentations prepared)
  • Babysitters for children that come along with mom (you don't have to speak Spanish)
  • a few miscellaneous helpers for organizational purposes

The charlas will take place at a community center in Fells Point on Saturday mornings from 9:30-12.  You can volunteer to present as little as 30 minutes of material at a time. I would love to have you present on multiple days. In addition to the time you will spend presenting, I would like to have one large group meeting with all our volunteers and then a shorter meeting to review the material a few days before you present.

We're looking forward to hearing from Latinos, Peace Corps volunteers, those who have picked Spanish up over the years, those who want to become involved in the community.  Feel free to share with non-Bienestar members.

This is intended to be a low-commitment, fun and practical way to engage with the Latino community in Baltimore.
